Beau Cottington

It was a hot weekend averaging around 92 degrees, but beautiful weather especially at night. Kurt ran away with the win and is no doubt the man to beat in the desert right now. First time my wife has been to the desert in several months, nice to have her out riding and helping with the filming duties… as well as a the gopro helmet cam contribution from 2-stroke racer Skyler Howes. I am pretty stoked with how the edit turned out, used an old grimey white stripes tune. Not sure what is next on the list, EX and H&H on the same weekend in two weeks… we will see.

4/14/2012: BBR Mag put on a bodyboard expo at the Wavehouse in Mission Beach (San Diego) and it was a great time. Lots of vendors with great stuff dumb cheap, lots of throw-outs and raffles. Good food and booze. Everyone was stoked. I put this edit together with the stuff I filmed on the flow barrel. Kevin Jimenez, Bud Miyamoto and several others.

It’s been a dry season, and we were lucky to get a big storm in so late. Smooth turns in the trees interrupted by unintentional log jibs & rock core-shots… the norm for a spring pow sesh in socal. Mountain High resort 3/18/12 gopro hero2. Good times.

Aside from a few surfers when I first arrived, I had the break entirely to myself for over an hour with some really fun peaky sets. Negative low tide kept it shallow and visibility was great, you can see a ton of stuff going on underwater through the waves. My seal homie popped up to say hi again too which is becoming a regular occurrence, I think he loves this spot as much as I do! Track is “Pretender” by Miike Snow

Back in November 2011 I picked up a GoPro Hero2, and started to film for a bodyboard edit of myself. I had so much footage I had to get an edit up finally, and I am happy with how it turned out. I really have some amazing times here in SD, our waves are not huge but just enough to have a great time and the wild life really takes it over the top. I had some hard stuff to deal with in my life since I started this project, and I took all that emotion/stress and put it into my surfing. It has really helped me get though hard times, and I feel very lucky to have such outlets in my life. For the filming I used a GoPro headstrap mount so its a pretty good POV perspective of boogin. I want to dedicate this video to my late Gramma Dorothy, I love and miss you.

Round 2 of the 2012 AMA National and Hound Series went off without a hitch, a beautiful day at red mountain with just enough wind to keep the dust out of the way. Destry Abbott got an awesome start but Kurt Caselli took some risks and pushed hard to take the win. David Pearson also made a late charge to take 2nd, leaving Abbott in 3rd. Nick Burson was running near the front early, and still finished a solid 4th with Justin Morrow not far behind in 5th. I woke up at 3am, drove the 3 hours to red mountain, and then back right after the race. The day went flawlessly, and I had the edit done before I went to sleep… I love it when everything works out. Our next round will not be until late March up in Idaho, that should be cool I have been been to Idaho before.

Trying to stir up a little more interest in this DVD, I put up a segment of Nick Burson blazing through a special test at the VCMC Rodeo Enduro last September. This single event DVD is still for sale, available at http://abstractcollective.com for only 15$

The 2012 AMA National Hare & Hound Series got off to a windy start, but it was good racing as always. Kurt Caselli took the win with his KTM, David Pearson finished second on his Kawasaki and David Kamo took 3rd on his JCR Honda. Destry Abbott had a solid ride until he lost his brakes and had to settle with 4th. Unfortunately, SoCal MC Club rider and race Lance Black was killed in action during loop one, my condolences to his family and friends, RIP Lance.

This was the first video I ever released, back in 1997. Daily Bread Magazine took me in as a videographer and I created DBV (daily bread video, simply) which I did 2 titles for before moving on to other things. Transcend was a culmination of years of work, a lifetime of ideas and a lot of effort by some talented skaters. I had no idea what I was doing when I started this, I watched some people edit before, but never had my own editing system because the were so expensive at the time. Daily Bread’s owner Angie Walton bought me the cutting-edge Canon XL-1 miniDV camera, a huge gamble on her part but it set us apart in image quality. When it came time to edit, we rented a mac based Media100 system for two weeks and I locked myself in the sound round and went to work. It was a stressfull learning process, but I kept it simple and focused on content and timing. I wanted this video to have a cinematic feel, and I think I accomplished that goal. Looking back it seems bold, but I did the whole thing in black and white, except for the very last shot… to further push the cinematic vibe. We premiered the video at the Ken Theatre in Kensington (San Diego), and had a fun after party at Angie’s loft in downtown. The support from my family and friends was unreal, and the reviews and response from the public was more than I could have ever hoped for.

I did this team video for Razors Skate Co. back in about 2003. We did a ton of traveling in the US and in Europe and it was an awesome time. Lots of amazing blading in this video, brings back a lot of great memories.

I did this quick edit with footy I had sitting around of Louie Zamora. Just a fun day at a local SD skatepark, with some random local kids hanging around. “Kent” seemed to be the most interesting of the bunch, and would not leave my cameras alone. It was a fun little afternoon.

Teaser for a new DVD I am releasing on a single race, the VCMC Rodeo Enduro at The Ranch off-road facility in Anza, CA on 9/18/11. Pre-order will be open on the 11/25. The DVD features Nick Burson, Larry Roeseler, Ryan Kudla, Nick Hamil and more. Includes helmet cam footage from race winner Nick Burson, as well as footage of amateur classes.

I think this day was the best conditions I have seen at Scripps in the last couple years, and the most crowded. Really fun though, everyone was cool and we all got plenty of waves.

The final of the 2011 AMA national hare & hound series was a great event, perfect weather and perfect organization per usual with a 100’s MC event. Kendall took the win with Abbott in 2nd and Argubright in 3rd. Kurt Caselli had clinched the title the race prior, but he was still out there to support everyone and he even helped film a few clips for me. That’s all for the H&H’s until late January 2012, but look out for a DVD on the series coming from me for the christmas season. It will include 2009, 2010, and 2011 H&H series races along with a few one off events. It will be called ProMotoTV Volume 2.
