Presented by SoCal MC at Johnson Valley OHV area on 4/14/13. It was a hot, dusty and windy weekend in the desert and a fast and technical course made for some eventful racing. The injury count for the day was much higher that usual and had everyone’s hearts feeling heavy. Toby Price from Australia had a crazy crash at high speed and injured his head and neck, he is in the hospital right now awaiting surgery and is in stable condition. Skyler Howes had a tough day also having a high speed crash after an amazing start and running in the top 3 early on. He fractured several vertebrae and got pretty banged up, he is currently in a back brace and starting recovery. Kurt Caselli was 3rd of the start but worked himself into the lead and pulled it out to about 5 minutes by the finish line. Jacob Argubright put in a solid ride for second, with Tuffy Pearson putting his TM 300 2-Stroke on the podium in 3rd. Filmed and edited by Beau Cottington with additional footage by Skyler Howes, Erek Kudla and Quinn Cody. For more info and videos visit promoto.tv and nationalhareandhound.com
After almost a year in the underworld, I am finally reaching the surface with the relaunch of my production company website http://abstractcollective.com . I lost my domain due to some strange circumstances, and had a huge uphill climb to get it back in my possession and functional. It all finally went through yesterday, so I am excited to even just have my landing page online! lol I have a new off-road racing DVD that will be available soon, stay tuned, follow me and support the cause! Thanks!
I filmed the SSS series for the RFCC back in 2003, it was a great time and some all time blading went down by some serious legends in the sport. Produced by Sunshine Distribution, filmed, edited, and directed by Beau Cottington.
Back in the glory days of blading, VideoGroove our one true video magazine did a battle format video where crews from different cities put forth edits to be judged by those who bought the video and mailed in their ballots. This was the second edition, and I am stoked on the edit we made. We used a classic remix of a legendary tune, “Champion Sound” by the Bad Company. The VG crew is trying to re-launch the BMC series this summer, be sure to support the cause! Blade or die!
Skyler Howes had a hell of a day at Spangler Hills OHV area near Ridgecrest, CA during the 2 round of the 2013 AMA National Hare & Hound series. After a OK start, he hit some rocks and had a big swap out only about 2 minutes into the race. He went on to break the top ten before ultimately crashing again hard about 10 miles from the finish. He hit his head hard and hurt his wrist, he was concussed for sure… in addition to losing his helmet visor and the GoPro Camera mounted to it as well! Luckily, the Four Aces motorcycle club who put on the race went and found the lost GoPro out on the course and mailed it back to me. Big thanks to them, I thought it was gone for good! Also, thanks to Skyler for always being my camera rider and caring so much when he lost my camera even though there was much more at stake. My only concern was that he was OK, thanks again to the club and the NHHA for helping get the camera home… and Skyler and I am glad your injuries were not too serious brotha!
This Christmas/New Years my wife and I decided to spend in Sweden with her family and it was a really awesome trip! We stayed at the Green Hotel in Tällberg which is about 3 hours north of Stockholm, they do a lot of traditional Swedish stuff so it was really cool to experience, from meals to outfits and even some live entertainment made it really interesting. The hotel was great, several ski areas nearby, fresh snow and beautiful frozen-lake views. The food & staff were excellent, and the indoor sauna and pool were amazing! Billiards, Swedish trivial pursuit over drinks in the bar, we rarely had a dull moment! We stayed there for a few days, then headed back into Stockholm for the remainder of the trip. We went ice skating in the city, and blading at the indoor skatepark ZeroOneSix in Eskilstuna. There were a bunch of young locals skating well which was really rad. We got to see a Swedish interpretation of “the Nutcracker Suite” and a lot of great dining out and hanging with friends and family. On new years we had an amazing dinner thoughtfully prepared by my wife’s friends, they even had some home brewed beer! Then to Eva my mother-in-law’s place to watch all the fireworks at midnight, Stockholm really lights up! The only bad thing about the trip was that it was too short, I can’t wait to go back.

This is a bit of an ode to California and the lifestyle it spoils us with. I have always wanted to ski, moto, skate, and surf all in the same day and I finally did it.
Filmed on January 5th, 2013 at Mountain High Ski Resort, Pala Raceway Motocross Park, Pala Skatepark, and La Jolla Shores in San Diego, CA.
Main Camera: GoPro Hero2 Black Edition. Additional Cameras: Canon 60D DSLR w/50mm f1.8 lens. Sony HDR-AS15. Filmed and edited by Beau Cottington, additional filming and skating by Tim Franken. Big thanks to Tim, Matt Lewis and Geoff Acers for coming out to skate with me.
A highlight edit from the footage I filmed at the 2012 Blading Cup. Filmed with a Sony HDR-AS15 and a Canon 60D DSLR with a Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens.
This seal took interest in me for some reason, and I was lucky enough to have my GoPro Hero 2 handy. I put together this little raw cut of my interactions with him (or her?) The very last clip in this edit was from a day or two later, pretty sure it’s the same seal.
AMA NHHA 2012 series round 9 was weld at Johnson Valley OHV area and was presented by Socal M/C. 120 miles in 80+ degree temps made for over 3 hours of racing even for the top finishers. Caselli and Pearson are battling for the 2012 title and with their 1-2 finishes this weekend the championship will now be decided at the final round on October 28th, yet again in Johnson Valley. Big thanks to the NHHA folks for all their hospitality. Thumbnail photo courtesy of Mark Kariya. Helmet cam riders: Skyler Howes & Ryan Kudla. Filmed and edited by Beau Cottington. Filmed on a Canon XH-A1, Canon 60D DSLR with 50mm f1.8 & 15mm f2.8 fisheye, ProTune enabled GoPro Hero 2, Sony HDR-AS15 POV/Action Camera. Helmet Cameras - Skyler Howes: GoPro Hero1, Ryan Kudla: ContourHD. Edited on FCP v6.06 on a Macbook Pro Dual G5 3.0g. FCP color grading.
I picked up the Sony HDR-AS15 and this was my first test edit of the new 120FPS slow motion feature. It records in overrun fashion, so your footage is natively slow motion living on a 720p 30FPS MP4 clip. I converted to DVCPROHD 720p60fps and edited with that FCP sequence setting. No speed changes, color grading or filters. I exported to a H.264 Quicktime file, 720p, 30fps, 7500kbps with 48k stereo audio. I am impressed with this camera’s ease of use, battery life, cost, and slow motion feature. More comprehensive testing to come soon. This edit was filmed by myself and Geoff Acers at the PQ skatepark in San Diego, CA and features both of us as well as Tim Franken and Carlos Jaquez.
